Falling for Columbia: Southern Charm, USC Vibes, and Hidden Gems
If you’re hunting for the perfect blend of historic allure, vibrant energy, and unmatched Southern hospitality, look no further than South Carolina's capital city.
We recently took a trip down to Columbia, South Carolina, to tour the University of South Carolina (USC). With my youngest daughter looking at this for a potent school for this upcoming September, we wanted to get a real feel for the campus, the town, and the local rhythm.
Spoiler alert: Columbia absolutely delivered. From the moment we touched down, we were hooked. Here is our breakdown of the ultimate weekend in Columbia, complete with a few spots we uncovered along the way.

The Gateway to the South: Easy In, Easy Out
Our journey started at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE), and it might just be one of the most stress-free airport experiences we’ve ever had.
- Minimal terminals meant zero frantic rushing.
- Virtually no waiting time at baggage claim.
- Incredible hospitality right at the gate.
In fact, a friendly local greeter met us right as we exited the secure area to answer questions, flash a welcoming smile, and give us a quick primer on the region. Talk about genuine Southern hospitality before we even left the building!
Where to Stay: On-Trend Vibes at The Graduate Columbia
When visiting a college town, you want to stay somewhere that captures the spirit of the school. We booked a room at The Graduate Columbia, and it is by far one of the coolest, most on-trend boutique hotels you can find.
Local History Note: The building itself is a beautifully converted historic apartment building, seamlessly blending old-school structure with quirky, collegiate-chic design. It’s located within easy walking distance of the USC campus.
While winding down, we grabbed a drink at the hotel’s signature bar, The Trophy Room, and chatted with James, who moved down to Columbia as a transplant from Philadelphia. He shared that while Columbia offers all the perks, arts, and culinary choices of a major capital city, it retains a tight-knit, welcoming "small-town" feel.

Walking the Historic Horseshoe at USC
The centerpiece of the university is undoubtedly The Horseshoe, the historic heart of the campus. Walking across it feels like stepping directly into a living history book, with architecture stretching back to before the Civil War.
THE TREES OF THE HORSESHOE
| Original Canopy (1800s) | Strictly American Elms |
| The Turning Point | Lost to Dutch Elm Disease |
| Modern Canopy (1930s+) | Heritage Live Oaks, Laurel Oaks, Willow Oaks, and Dogwoods |
The campus canopy is recognized as part of the Heritage Trees of South Carolina. While the original 19th-century American elms were lost to Dutch elm disease decades ago, they were replaced in the 1930s with a magnificent collection of sprawling Oaks—including stunning Live Oaks with massive, extended limbs. Walking beneath these centuries-old giants under a pleasant, unusually warm 80°F sunny day in early March was pure magic.
Columbia’s Culinary Scene: From Mansions to Motor Supply
Columbia has a remarkably sophisticated food and drink culture that bridges old-world charm with modern, sustainable dining.

1. A Caffeinated Treat at Knowledge Perk Coffee Company
For a late afternoon pick-me-up, we stopped at Knowledge Perk Coffee Company at 1527 Gervais Street. Located directly across from the USC Law School, this spot is a stunning 1890s Southern-style historic house converted into a coffee shop.
We sat out on the massive front porch, soaking in the late afternoon sun. I ordered a drip Ethiopian single-origin coffee—it was solid, exceptionally clean, and well-balanced with bright floral notes and light hints of stone fruit.
Our Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely a must-stop!
2. Fine Dining on Main Street: Halls Chophouse
For dinner, we headed over to Main Street to track down one of the city's most celebrated dining institutions: Halls Chophouse. Started by the Hall family, this legendary steakhouse is famous for bringing world-class hospitality and exceptional prime cuts to downtown Columbia.
I enjoyed a phenomenal, perfectly seared fresh steak paired with a refreshing, vibrant huckleberry cocktail. The atmosphere inside was lively yet elegant—an absolute classic Main Street experience.

3. Farm-to-Table Freshness: Motor Supply Co. Bistro
We also made sure to venture into the historic Congaree Vista district to visit Motor Supply Co. Bistro. Nestled inside a beautifully repurposed late-1800s engine and motor supply building, this restaurant was a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement in Columbia long before it was a trend. Their menu is handwritten daily based on what fresh ingredients can be sourced from local, sustainable farms. The rustic-meets-urban vibe here is unmatched.
The Ultimate Afternoon Day Trip: Congaree National Park
On our final afternoon, we took a short 30-minute drive out of the city center to explore Congaree National Park. If you love the outdoors, this is one of America's most incredible, lesser-known national park gems.
The Experience: The park features a stunning, easily accessible 2.4-mile elevated boardwalk loop that guides you directly through towering ancient trees, pristine wetlands, and a remarkably tranquil sanctuary. It was the perfect way to cap off our trip.
