Colorado’s newest national monument(October 2022) protects the former training grounds of the Army’s 10th Mountain Division, once used to train soldiers in backcountry ski techniques during World War II. Over 53,000 acres have been preserved in the Tenmile and the Camp Hale Areas near Vail, Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Ski Cooper. The proclamation pairs historic preservation with prime backcountry recreation.
